Originally Grinsell &amp; Bourne, the business took on this name in 1871 after the original partnership dissolved. They were manufacturing silversmiths based in Birmingham.

John Grinsell went into business with his four sons in 1871, and they had manufacturing workshops in Birmingham, as well as show rooms in Holborn Circus, London and in Glasgow. They made a range of silver-mounted glass and stoneware, including lock-up liquor frames, biscuit boxes, butter dishes, cups, cruet frames, flagons, and salad bowls.

They registered their trademark a "Cupid standing on a scroll" in 1879. Around 1905, they registered as a limited company under the name John Grinsell &amp; Sons Ltd. They were later bought by Barker Ellis &amp; Co. Ltd which finally went into administration in 1992.

The firm dates its origin to 1720, but the first documentation of the family's association with the silver trade is in 1748, when John West (born 1734) apprenticed to Bartholomew Mosse, Master Silversmith of Dublin. He was followed by his brother Matthew (1747 - 1806) who apprentices in 1762. After their apprenticeship, both were active as silversmiths and Matthew became Master of the Company of Goldsmiths in 1783/4 and one of the most renowned silversmiths of Dublin. Matthew West was active at Skinner's Row.

In the 19th century, the family continued the silversmiths and retailers business as Clarke &amp; West (c. 1803, Capel Street), Matthew West, Matthew West &amp; Sons (c. 1825) and later as James West &amp; Son (from 1841 in new premises at 18/19, College Green), becoming one of the foremost jewellers in Ireland.

The British Royal Collection has two brooches made by West &amp; Son. They were bought by Prince Albert for Queen Victoria on a visit to Dublin in 1849.

West &amp; Son participated to the 1851 Great Exhibition in London, and to the Dublin Exhibition of 1853.

Their replicas of antique Irish ornaments, characterized by sinuous, intricate patterning, played an important role in the revival of ancient Celtic designs and in the development of the Arts and Crafts movement.

After the death of James West (1877), the firm was managed by his son Langley Archer West (d. 1932) in partnership (1902-1912) with Charles Howard Lawson, George William Thornley and George Crowly.

In 1912, the firm transferred to new premises at 102/103 Grafton Street, Dublin (from 1965 at 33 Grafton Street). West &amp; Son closed on 13 February 2010.

Thomas Johnson

Thomas Johnson was a well-known London-based silversmith working from 10 Dyers Building in Holborn, London.

He registered his first mark in January in 1850.  In 1852 he was listed as a manufacturing silversmith of every description of dressing case fittings and silver flasks. He subsequently moved to 32, John Street, Bedford Row, WC.  Where in 1860 he is listed as a manufacturing silversmith and manufacturer of every description of dressing case and travelling bag fittings, card cases, snuff and fuzee boxes, vinaigrettes and first-class spring-smelling bottles, and silver flasks.

Johnson’s listing for 1861 was expanded to include railway lanterns and every description of silver small work. On the occasion of Thomas Johnson’s fifty-first birthday, he, his family, and employees met on 8th February 1868 at the Lamb Hotel, Cattle Market, Holloway, for dinner and entertainment. The style of the firm was changed c1875 to Thomas Johnson &amp; Sons and again in c1878 to Johnson, Sons &amp; Edmonds, listed from 1879 to 1898 as gold and silversmiths and manufacturers of dressing cases, and travelling bag fittings, card cases, snuff and fuzee boxes, chatelaines, belts, buckles, glass and silver flasks, railway lanterns and every description of gold, silver, and other pencil cases and gold and silver mounters and glass cutters. The partners at this time were Thomas Johnson, Frederick Edmonds, Thomas George Johnson, and Edward James Winter Johnson. F. Edmonds &amp; E.J. W. Johnson 18/02/1890-3-4. T.G. Johnson retired on 1st January 1883, Thomas Johnson on 25th March 1885, and E.J. W. Johnson on 5th October 1891.

Thereafter the business continued under the same style first by Frederick Edmonds .28/03/1892, 23/02/1897 until his death on 5th February 1898 and then by his widow, Mary Harris Edmonds 18/05/1898. The latter transferred the business on 27 August 1898 to Sampson Mordan &amp; Co Ltd after which Johnson, Sons &amp; Edmonds were listed for a short time as gold and silver pencil makers at 32 John Street, Bedford Row, WC. John Wyke

In the 1773 Report on Assay Offices the name of John Wyke (though the Minutes Clerk mistook the name and wrote White) is coupled with that of his partner Thomas Green of Liverpool, amongst other silversmiths and plate workers who had entered their marks at Chester and who were alive at the time.

Wyke and Green were both watchmakers, hence their combined marks IW above TG incuse, normally associated with watchmakers, but as with many watchcase makers they were responsible on occasions for making small articles in silver. The names are listed by Jackson on page 377 under 1773.

Son of Ralph Kedden of the Isle of Wight gentleman apprenticed to Emanuel Russell of Bennet Hill bookbinder of the Merchant Taylors’ Company 3 October1682.

Free, 1 February 1692. Mark entered as smallworker, 20 November 1700. Address Noble Street. “Free Merchant Taylor”. The character of his master’s trade suggests a specialization in silver mounts for prayer-books etc.
