Maker: Samuel Taylor

A superb and rare pair of tea caddies with the original matching sugar bowl and cover, made by the specialist tea caddy maker, Samuel Taylor.

The fully hallmarked bases slide off, so the precious tea can be inserted and the lids of each of the tea caddies can be removed.

One of the caddies would have been used for green tea, and the other for black tea.

The sugar bowl is marked underneath and on the lid.

The finals of the tea caddies, and the cover of the sugar bowl, have an attractive flower motif.

The crest is that of Maitland (Earl of Lauderdale). James Maitland, 7th Earl of Lauderdale, was one of 16 Scottish peers to be represented in British Parliament in 1747.

These are beautiful in the hand and in excellent condition.

Dimensions: height of caddy 13.5 cm, diameter of bowl 10 cm

Samuel Taylor

Samuel Taylor was the son of Thomas Taylor apprenticed to John Newton (who was a specialist Tea Caddy maker ) in March 1737.

His first mark was entered in May 1744 and he was working at Maiden Lane off Wood Street. He entered a second mark in 1757 and like his master John Newton was a specialist maker of tea caddies and sugar bowls and rarely made anything outside this category.
