Today when we think of frames, we think of an object used to hold pieces of art, photographs, or documents, however, they were once considered to be a vital part of the piece they were holding, and sometimes even a work of art themselves.
During the late Victorian period silver photograph frames became hugely popular with the middle and upper classes. The concept of photography was in its infancy, and to be able to afford both a photograph and a silver frame was a clear sign of wealth. From ornate Victorian frames, to enamelled art nouveau and angular art deco examples, there is a frame to suit every cherished memory.
As time progressed, frames became commonplace within the home and, as to be expected, the style of fames tended to adhere to the general design fashions of the periods. As silver is such a hard wearing and resilient material there are many examples of antique silver photograph frames that we are still able to enjoy today.
