Antique Silver Victorian Soup Tureen made in 1841

This superb antique Victorian sterling silver soup tureen is melon shaped with a plain silver liner. It stands on an oval pedestal foot.
The tureen is beautifully engraved on either side of the body and lid with an armorial. The border of the body is shaped with a scroll and leaf design. The tureen has two exceptionally shaped handles, ornamented with a central leaf and bead decoration.
The original plain silver liner is hallmarked for 1843.

Tureens were introduced via the French court in the early 18th century as a functional table piece from which a host could serve soup or stew. The word tureen is derived from the French word terrine.
Louis XIV’s taste for hot, rich stews is often credited as a major influence in the use of tureens. As tureens became a symbol of wealth, many were engraved with marital or family armorials.
In the mid 1700s, tureens were provided with matching stands and ladles. By the late 1700s, sauceboats were replaced with smaller sauce tureens, often matching the larger tureens.

John Edward Terrey was an important English silversmith producing mainly tableware and presentation pieces. He crafted very few new items and would recuperate silverware by altering and re-chasing them.
There are no records of an apprenticeship and he entered his first mark at Goldsmiths Hall as a plateworker in 1814, together with Samuel Hennell. After two years the partnership dissolved and Terrey entered his own mark as a plateworker, registering the address: Foster Lane.
In 1819, Terrey moved to Hatton Garden, where he stayed until 1852, after which he moved to Lewisham, Kent. His death is recorded in 1859.

Import restrictions are applicable to some destinations, especially the import of products containing materials such as ivory and tortoiseshell. We cannot accept orders requiring shipment to any countries which implement such controls.
All items are checked and photographed prior to packaging, and we aim to dispatch 1-3 days after receiving cleared payment.
