Description

Two antique silver George IV wine coolers on a spreading circular foot chased with vine borders.

The coolers have melon fluted bodies with vine rims and bifurcated scroll handles, each engraved with a coat of arms and a crest, with the Earl’s coronet above.

They both have internal detachable liners and, later, have wooden plinths applied with plaques engraved with presentation inscriptions and numerous facsimile signatures.

These magnificent wine coolers can be displayed with or without their plinths.

One cooler and liner made by Kirkby Waterhouse & Company. The other Waterhouse, Hodgson & Company, the liner made by J & N Creswick. One cooler was made in 1821 and the other in 1826.

The arms are those of Bingham quartering others impaling Brundenell, for George, 3rd Earl of Lucan (1800 – 1888) and his wife Anne (d. 1877), daughter of Robert, 6th Earl of Cardigan (1760 -1837), whom he married in 1829. These would have been an important gift at their wedding.

Dimensions: height 24.76 cm (without the plinths); weight 149.00 troy oz.

Provenance: George, 3rd Earl of Lucan (1800 – 1888) wedding present, and then, 100 years later, presented to Captain A.S. Cunningham-Reid, also as a wedding present.

The plinths are inscribed with facsimile signatures of the most powerful men in both Houses of Parliament, including the incumbent Prime Minister at the time (Stanley Baldwin).

The inscription reads as follows: “Presented to Captain A.S. Cunningham-Reid, D.F.C., M.P. on the occasion of his marriage on 12th May 1927 by his friends in both Houses of Parliament.”

Alec Cunningham-Reid, when he married in 1927, was described as England’s handsomest man marrying Englands wealthiest girl.

The 3rd Earl of Lucan and Alec Cunningham-Reid pictured in additional images.

The Earl of Lucan gave the fateful order in the Crimean war for the Light Brigade to charge the Russian guns in October 1854, although was exonerated in a court martial. Despite Lucan being married to the 7th Earl of Cardigan’s sister, Cardigan, who was also a commanding officer in the Crimea, disliked him intensely.
