A large Mexican metalware wine cooler of Scandinavian style, in the form of a vase.
The wine cooler has plain tall sides with a flared rim, and two fruiting vine drop handles. It has an applied openwork band with clusters of grapes and scrolls, onto a spreading circular foot.
Codan of Mexico City were very famous for making Scandinavian designs, and this certainly has a Georg Jensen feel to it. This item is a fair bit larger than most wine coolers.
Mark of Codan, incuse marks MEXICO STERLING 925 and eagle mark numbered 7 for Mexico City.

Codan was a Mexican silversmith. In the first half of the 20th century, silver items manufactured in Mexico were marked simply “silver” or “sterling”. Usually a location (Mexico or a town name) and silver fineness (925, 925/1000, 950, 980) was included.
In 1948, the Government of Mexico promoted the reintroduction of the “eagle mark” to identify the manufacturers of silver items. The “eagle” was stamped with a number associated to a silver manufacturing company. This system was unsuccessful as eagle stamps were misused or “loaned” to more than one artist of maker and was abandoned in the 1980s. It was substituted by the “letter and number” system adopted c. 1980 and still in use. In the “Letter and number” system a letter identifies a location (T for Taxco, M for Mexico City), and the second letter is the first letter of the maker’s first or last name. The number is the number of registrations of the maker.The majority of their work in the middle of the Twentieth Century was in the Scandinavian taste of makers such as a Georg Jensen.

Some countries levy import duties and local taxes. Payment of these is the purchaser’s responsibility and beyond the control of William Walter Antiques Ltd. When the container has reached the destination country, a customs representative will contact you for payment prior to delivery.
Import restrictions are applicable to some destinations, especially the import of products containing materials such as ivory and tortoiseshell. We cannot accept orders requiring shipment to any countries which implement such controls.
All items are checked and photographed prior to packaging, and we aim to dispatch 1-3 days after receiving cleared payment.
