Set of George III Antique Sterling Silver Cast Candlesticks made for the Earl of Hillsborough in 1767

Description
A magnificent set of four important antique silver cast George III corinthian column candlesticks. They are of slender form on wide square bases with gadroon borders, engraved to one side with arms of the Earl of Hillsborough. A small stag’s head crest and coronet is engraved to the top of each nozzle and numbered 1 to 4, as are the candlesticks. All made by Robert Albin Cox for Jeffreys and Jones Retailers.
These superb candlesticks would have been made for the table at Hillsborough castle in Northern Ireland, which was being built in the late 1760s. The 1st Earl of Hillsborough, Wills Hills, was a good friend of Benjamin Franklin.
Hillsborough Castle is now the official residence of the Queen in Northern Ireland.
Dimensions: 27.94 cm
Provenance: the coat of arms of the Earl of Hillsborough, who served as Secretary of State of Staff for the colonies in 1768 to 1772. He bore this title between 1751-89, he then became 1st Marquess of Downshire. Prior to 1751, he was Viscount Hillsborough.

First mark, as largeworker, 1752. Second mark 1758. Third mark 1759. Heal records him in Fetter Lane till 1773 and at Little Britain 1769.
Elected to the livery 1791, Prime Warden 1818. Died 1826.
Arthur Grimwade notes, that due to Cox’s apparent longevity, it’s likely he had a son with the same name.
