This impressive pair of George III silver candlesticks have V-shaped columns which surmount the round bases, each of which have bright-cut engraving depicting bows, swags and foliage.
The underside of the bases still bears the original wood. The upper portion of each column is encompassed with further bright cut engraving, reflecting that on the sconces. The columns are also engraved with the crest of the tobacco merchant Robert Findlay, of Easterhill Glasgow.
An excellent pair of candlesticks with a fine provenance.

Provenance: Easterhill is situated on the right bank of the Clyde, about three miles eastward from Glasgow, on the London road. In ancient times, the lands formed part of easter Dalbeth, by which they are bounded on the west. Easterhill property extends to about 70 acres, and in the reign of Queen Anne, it belonged to John Wardrop of Dalbeth.
Findlay was son of the Rev. Dr. Robert Findlay, Professor of Divinity in Glasgow College. He entered the Merchants’ House in 1778, and in 1797 was Dean of Guild. Findlay espoused a daughter of Robert Dunlop of Househill, fourth son of James Dunlop (the second) of Garnkirk, and one of the original partners of the Ship Bank.
Took over John Winter’s candlesticks business in 1783 and 10 years later (1793) transferred the business to John Green & Company. Exclusive maker of fine candlesticks, candelabra and chambersticks.
John Parsons died in 1814 and when his sister Mary Parsons died in 1815, she left a bequest of £1,500.00 (approx £200 thousand in today’s money) in her will, to help needy silversmiths. This was founded in affectionate memory by her brother and the charity continues today in Sheffield.

We deliver to the address provided at the time of purchase but not to PO addresses, as a signature is required upon delivery.
Some countries levy import duties and local taxes. Payment of these is the purchaser’s responsibility and beyond the control of William Walter Antiques Ltd. When the container has reached the destination country, a customs representative will contact you for payment prior to delivery.
Import restrictions are applicable to some destinations, especially the import of products containing materials such as ivory and tortoiseshell. We cannot accept orders requiring shipment to any countries which implement such controls.
All items are checked and photographed prior to packaging, and we aim to dispatch 1-3 days after receiving cleared payment.
