Description

A very fine pair of Georgian silver oval salvers, which have a bold gadroon border and stand on four feet.

They have beautiful engraving surrounding two family crests

The presence of two crests indicates they were made for a wedding in 1800 (the joining of two families), and the fact that the mottos are placed above the crest indicates they were made for two Scottish families.

The presence and style of the engraving is also indicative that they were expressly made for a Scottish client. The first crests motto means “Honour is the Reward of Virtue” and the second crest “By Strength and Valour”.

When purchased, these were a set of four but we have divided them into two pairs.

They are illustrated in Poole’s book “Identifying Antique British Silver”.

They are in excellent crisp condition and are of an unusually heavy weight.

Dimensions: length 26.2 cm; weight 40 troy oz.

Maker
Hannam & Crouch

Thomas Hannam completed his apprenticeship to John Cafe in 1761 and went into partnership with John Crouch in 1765.

The firm was known particularly as makers of fine quality trays, salvers and waiters.

Their earlier marks also appear on cast candlesticks (likely due to Hannam’s apprenticeship to the Cafes).
