Pair of George III Antique Silver Salt Cellars made in 1781

A pair of good antique silver oval-shaped George III salt cellars with beaded edges.
They stand on four traditional hoof feet and are embellished with a contemporary family crest on one side of each salt cellar.
The salts are a well known model by the specialist salt cellar maker Robert Hennell, and it is probable that John Lambe – who was principally a spoon maker – purchased them from him.
The salts are gilded to the inside and in excellent condition.

Son of Edward John Lambe, late citizen and goldsmith of London deceased, apprenticed to Ebenezer Coker, 5th February 1755 on payment of £8.5s of the charity of the Goldsmiths’ Company.
Free 3rd November 1762. Appears as spoon maker, Fetter Lane, in the Parl Report List 1773, which implies a mark entered in the missing register. First recorded mark entered as spoon maker, 8th February 1774. Address: 97 Fetter Lane.
Second mark on move to 29 Fetter Lane, 25th August 1780. Third mark (two sizes) 15th February 1782.
Fourth (two sizes) 9th April 1782. Fifth (two sizes) 19th September 1782. Sixth (two sizes), as plateworker, 11th February 1783. Seventh 4th July 1785.
Eighth 21st May 1788. Ninth 30th August 1790. Tenth 12th February 1791. Eleventh (two sizes), 19th April 1791. Twelfth as plateworker, 17th October 1791.
Heal records him as spoon maker and watch maker, 29 Fetter Lane, from 1783 only till 1796. His brother George – who was apprenticed to James Tookey as spoonmaker – does not appear to have entered a mark and was very probably in company with John.

Some countries levy import duties and local taxes. Payment of these is the purchaser’s responsibility and beyond the control of William Walter Antiques Ltd. When the container has reached the destination country, a customs representative will contact you for payment prior to delivery.
Import restrictions are applicable to some destinations, especially the import of products containing materials such as ivory and tortoiseshell. We cannot accept orders requiring shipment to any countries which implement such controls.
All items are checked and photographed prior to packaging, and we aim to dispatch 1-3 days after receiving cleared payment.
