Pair of George II Antique Silver Sauce Boats made in 1754
A fine pair of antique silver George II period sauce boats made in 1754 by William Cripps of London.
These sauce boats have a delicate gadroon border with cast knurled scroll handles. Each sauce boat stands on three cast knurled feet.
They have a combined capacity of 800 ml.
Dimensions: 20 x 10 cm; weight 22.25 troy oz.
William Cripps was a prominent and prolific manufacturing and retail silversmith based in London. After being apprenticed to the popular goldsmith and banker William Daume, he was set free in 1738. Five years later, he submitted his first mark as a largeworker in Compton Street, Soho. In 1746, he moved his premises to St. James’s Street, where he remained until his death.
Cripps specialised in fine tableware pieces and became a “versatile exponent of the rococo style” (Arthur G. Grimwade, London Goldsmiths 1697-1837, 1990). Nowadays his sets of dishes, candlesticks and drinking vessels in the Rococo style are sought after in auction by collectors, and some of his pieces can be seen at the Victoria and Albert museum in London.
Cripps died in 1766 and, as it appears from his will, he did not have a wife nor children. His business was continued first by George Coyte and later by Mark Cripps, possibly William’s cousin.

We deliver to the address provided at the time of purchase but not to PO addresses, as a signature is required upon delivery.
Some countries levy import duties and local taxes. Payment of these is the purchaser’s responsibility and beyond the control of William Walter Antiques Ltd. When the container has reached the destination country, a customs representative will contact you for payment prior to delivery.
Import restrictions are applicable to some destinations, especially the import of products containing materials such as ivory and tortoiseshell. We cannot accept orders requiring shipment to any countries which implement such controls.
All items are checked and photographed prior to packaging, and we aim to dispatch 1-3 days after receiving cleared payment.
