An antique silver early George II salver with a mask punctuated border. The masks carved on the border are a most unusual feature, and are reminiscent of the famous Grinling Gibbons carvings of the period.

Description

A rare antique silver George II salver with a mask punctuated border. The masks carved on the border are a most unusual feature, and are reminiscent of the famous Grinling Gibbons carvings of the period. Another unusual feature is the makers mark, which has been struck twice.

The salver stands on three stepped pad supports.

Gabriel Sleath

Gabriel Sleath, the son of a tallow chandler, was a London goldsmith and silversmith. He was an outspoken critic of Huguenot goldsmiths working in England. Sleath was born in Barnet, London in 1674 and died in Barnet c. March, 1756.

A very fine and important maker of holloware such as salvers and coffee pots.

First mark entered in 1707. In 1753, he entered into a partnership with Francis Crump (his former apprentice).

Purchases will be sent via Royal Mail Special Delivery, FedEx, Parcel Force, A-Z couriers; other delivery providers may be used in extenuating circumstances. We deliver to the address provided at the time of purchase but not to PO addresses, as a signature is required upon delivery.

Some countries levy import duties and local taxes. Payment of these is the purchaser’s responsibility and beyond the control of William Walter Antiques Ltd. When the container has reached the destination country, a customs representative will contact you for payment prior to delivery.

Import restrictions are applicable to some destinations, especially the import of products containing materials such as ivory and tortoiseshell. We cannot accept orders requiring shipment to any countries which implement such controls.

All items are checked and photographed prior to packaging, and we aim to dispatch 1-3 days after receiving cleared payment.
