Maker
Thomas Harper

Born in Bristol c. 1735-40. Made a Mason of Lodge No. 24 at Bristol 1761. Paid dues until 1763, after which he emigrated to America. Became Royal Arch Mason in Charleston, South Carolina. Advertised in the South Carolina Gazette in 1773 as “Working Jeweller and Goldsmith has opened a shop in Broad St”.

Married in 1776 and then sailed from Georgetown for St Eustatius (Dutch West Indies) in 1778, having refused as a loyalist to take the oath of allegiance to the new state.

After the capture of Charlestown by the British in 1781, he returned and opened a shop in Church St. He then turns up in London in 1783 and enters his first silversmiths mark in the London registers on 27 May 1790 at 207, Fleet St. He entered a second mark on 5 May 1810 and a third on 11 July 1829.

He stayed active in the Masonic movement and died at the reputed age of 96 on 25 April 1832. A fairly full life!
