A William IV antique silver marrow scoop of plain, double-ended form. The scoop has a hand chased shell back, which is also engraved with a crest.

Dimensions: length 22.5 cm

The long narrow gulley of the spoon allowed one to remove marrow from the bone. These spoons were widely used during the reign of Queen Anne, when marrow was considered to be quite a delicacy and meat was a luxury only the rich could afford regularly.

Born in 1774 and last in the line of the Bateman dynasty of silversmiths.

Second son of Jonathan and Ann Bateman, and grandson of Hester. Apprenticed in 1789 and free on the 6 February 1799. First mark entered in 1799 in partnership with Peter and Ann, January 1800. Address: Bunhill Row. Second mark with Peter in 1805. Working alone from 1815.

He sold the family business in around 1840 and died in Stoke Newington in 1850.

We deliver to the address provided at the time of purchase but not to PO addresses, as a signature is required upon delivery.

Some countries levy import duties and local taxes. Payment of these is the purchaser’s responsibility and beyond the control of William Walter Antiques Ltd. When the container has reached the destination country, a customs representative will contact you for payment prior to delivery.

Import restrictions are applicable to some destinations, especially the import of products containing materials such as ivory and tortoiseshell. We cannot accept orders requiring shipment to any countries which implement such controls.

All items are checked and photographed prior to packaging, and we aim to dispatch 1-3 days after receiving cleared payment.
