Antique Silver Queen Anne Scottish Tankard made in 1712 for The Earl of March

A rare Queen Anne Scottish tankard of plain tapering cylindrical form with a moulded girdle and foot.
The double-domed hinged lid has an acorn finial.
To one side, the tankard bears the coat of arms of the 2nd Earl of March (1696 – 1730) who succeeded his father in 1705 and married Anne Hamilton, Countess of Ruglen (born 5th April 1698).
To the other side, is the coat of arms of the Borough of Peebles where they lived in their castle (Neidpath Castle).
The tankard was made in Edinburgh by James Mitchelson (working 1706 – 1757) with the assay masters mark of Edward Penman.
This is a rare piece of increasingly rare early Scottish silver.
It is in fine condition and of good provenance.
It was sold at Sotheby’s in Gleneagles on 29th August 1983 (picture from that sale enclosed).
The tankard is of a form unique to Scotland. The last Scottish Queen Anne tankard that we know was sold, was at Christie’s in November 2008 from the estate of The Earl of Kintore.
