Antique Silver Old English Shell Pattern Cutlery / Flatware Service made in 1833

A fine and rare extensive early 19th century flatware service all made by William Eaton of London in 1833.

This wonderful service is in an unusual configuration of Old English shell pattern. The service is plain on the front but on the back there is a bold shell. All pieces are engraved with the same family crest.

The service would have been made for the Scottish family (Molleson or Mollison) as the motto “Fax Mentis Honestae Gloria” is placed above the crest of a Moors head (English family mottoes would be placed below). The English translation of the motto is “Glory is the torch that leads on an honourable mind”. This motto was used by Henry Frederick Prince of Wales (1594 – 1612) who was the eldest son of James VI and I, King of Scotland and England and also all Baronets of Nova Scotia from 1625.

The service is in quite superb condition and of a beautifully heavy gauge (for example, the tablespoons weigh about 3.25 troy oz each and the table forks about 3 troy oz).

A very fine and rare service for 18 place settings, all the same date and maker, which is rare to find in a service nearly 170 years old (two butter knives added in 1853).

The service also has the unusual addition of 12 toddy ladles (a great rarity – we have only ever encountered one other complete set).

The service can be bought without the knives or they can be changed for a different pattern.

Purchases will be sent via Royal Mail Special Delivery, FedEx, Parcel Force, A-Z couriers; other delivery providers may be used in extenuating circumstances. We deliver to the address provided at the time of purchase but not to PO addresses, as a signature is required upon delivery.

Some countries levy import duties and local taxes. Payment of these is the purchaser’s responsibility and beyond the control of William Walter Antiques Ltd. When the container has reached the destination country, a customs representative will contact you for payment prior to delivery.

Import restrictions are applicable to some destinations, especially the import of products containing materials such as ivory and tortoiseshell. We cannot accept orders requiring shipment to any countries which implement such controls.

All items are checked and photographed prior to packaging, and we aim to dispatch 1-3 days after receiving cleared payment.
