A rare late seventeenth century tulip shape nutmeg grater made circa 1690 -1695, which is engraved to the top and bottom with a naive Tudor Rose motif.

Description

A rare late seventeenth century tulip shape nutmeg grater made circa 1690 -1695, which is engraved to the top and bottom with a naive Tudor Rose motif.

The box bears the makers marks to both top and bottom interiors . The maker being  Thomas Kedden.( sometimes referred to as Kedder).

It has the typical ‘stand away’ hinge of the period.

The box is in good condition.

Dimensions, height 2.5 cm,  length 3.5 cm,  width at widest 3 cm.

Weight, 0.75 troy oz.

Thomas Kedden.

Son of Ralph Kedden of the Isle of Wight gentleman apprenticed to Emanuel Russell of Bennet Hill bookbinder of the Merchant Taylors’ Company 3 October1682.

Free, 1 February 1692. Mark entered as smallworker, 20 November 1700. Address Noble Street. “Free Merchant Taylor”. The character of his master’s trade suggests a specialization in silver mounts for prayer-books etc.

We deliver to the address provided at the time of purchase but not to PO addresses, as a signature is required upon delivery.

Some countries levy import duties and local taxes. Payment of these is the purchaser’s responsibility and beyond the control of William Walter Antiques Ltd. When the container has reached the destination country, a customs representative will contact you for payment prior to delivery.

Import restrictions are applicable to some destinations, especially the import of products containing materials such as ivory and tortoiseshell. We cannot accept orders requiring shipment to any countries which implement such controls.

All items are checked and photographed prior to packaging, and we aim to dispatch 1-3 days after receiving cleared payment.
