Description

A very fine and large Georgian silver Warwick cruet, which has a large central sugar caster and two smaller pepper/spice casters to the sides. To the rear are two cut glass oil and vinegar bottles with detachable tops (which can be placed in the rings provided).

To the front the stand is an impressive unengraved cartouche.

The casters are wonderfully hand pierced and all the pieces are mounted with an attractive wrythen finial.

The cruet is in superb condition throughout and is fully hallmarked on the base of the cruet, the base of all the casters and correctly part-marked on the caster lids and the handle of the cruet.

A wonderful cruet by Jabez Daniell who only produced casters and cruets (apprenticed to Samuel Wood castermaker in 1739; first mark 1749, Carey Lane).

Dimensions: height 26 cm, width 18.5 cm; weight (without glass) 44.25 troy oz, weight (with glass) 65.5 troy oz.

Jabez Daniell

The son of  Jonathan Daniel of Aldgate  London maltster , apprenticed to Samael Wood, 6 December 1739 ( a premium erased in the entry). Free, 17 March 1747.

First mark entered as largeworker, 28 July 1749. Address, Carey Lane, where Heal records him till 1768. Livery, May 1751. James Mince who was apprenticed to him in 1753 and free in 1761, appears to have worked in partnership with him from 1766-75 on the evidence of mark no 3633, found almost entirely on castors and Mince was described as “castor maker Carey Lane “in an apprenticeship entry of 1773.

Daniell was then probably in partnership with his son Thomas from about 1771, as they appear together as goldsmiths, Carey Lane in the Parl.

Report list 1773 (although Mince is not found). This partnership was apparently as Thomas entered a mark alone in 1774, possibly indicating Jabez’s death or retirement .
