A small early 19th century vinaigrette which is engraved with an unusual wrigglework motif of a marine nature around a vacant cartouche. The reverse has a simple wrigglework band.
The grille is simply pierced, the interior is gilded and it still has a piece of original sponge inside.
Dimensions: length 2.4 cm, width 1.75 cm; weight .225 troy oz.
Antique silver vinaigrettes: small, decorative and a wide variety of styles to choose from ensures that these delightful boxes are as collectible as ever. They were used to guard against disease and unpleasant odours. A sponge was placed inside the vinaigrette which was impregnated with aromatic vinegar and concentrated perfumed oils.
Matthew Linwood I, Birmingham silver maker, was born in 1754, apprenticed to Joseph Hunt (described in directories as a “gilt toy, plated military and crest button maker”).
He registered three marks between 1773 and 1801.
His son Matthew Linwood II (1756 – 1826) was a notable maker of silver boxes. Guardian of the Birmingham Assay Office in 1811. He registered marks in 1813 in partnership with his son Matthew Linwood III (1783 – 1847) who later moved to London, opening a jeweller’s shop in Fleet Street.

We deliver to the address provided at the time of purchase but not to PO addresses, as a signature is required upon delivery.
Some countries levy import duties and local taxes. Payment of these is the purchaser’s responsibility and beyond the control of William Walter Antiques Ltd. When the container has reached the destination country, a customs representative will contact you for payment prior to delivery.
Import restrictions are applicable to some destinations, especially the import of products containing materials such as ivory and tortoiseshell. We cannot accept orders requiring shipment to any countries which implement such controls.
All items are checked and photographed prior to packaging, and we aim to dispatch 1-3 days after receiving cleared payment.
