Description

A very good quality early George III period silver lidded tankard, of a classic bellied form with domed lid and beautifully pierced thumbpiece.

The tankard is engraved with the initials  S.B. together with the date 1766 and it is in superb condition. It also retains its original scratch weight of 25 troy 15 dwt to the underside.

The tankard is made in London in 1765 by William and James Priest.

William and James Priest (Preist) were brothers and working London silversmiths during the mid to late 1700’s.

William Priest, apprenticed to Richard Gurney in 1740, free 1749. 1st and 2 marks entered as largeworker in 1749 and 1750 in partnership with William Shaw. Livery 1758. 3rd mark with his presumed brother James Priest in 1764. Died circa 1801-1811.

James Priest, apprenticed to William Priest in 1750, free 1764. His mark was entered shortly after in partnership with William Priest and the presumed brothers are recorded as working together from 1764-1773. James’ son James Hammond Priest was apprenticed to him in 1783.

Purchases will be sent via Royal Mail Special Delivery, FedEx, Parcel Force, A-Z couriers; other delivery providers may be used in extenuating circumstances. We deliver to the address provided at the time of purchase but not to PO addresses, as a signature is required upon delivery.

Some countries levy import duties and local taxes. Payment of these is the purchaser’s responsibility and beyond the control of William Walter Antiques Ltd. When the container has reached the destination country, a customs representative will contact you for payment prior to delivery.

Import restrictions are applicable to some destinations, especially the import of products containing materials such as ivory and tortoiseshell. We cannot accept orders requiring shipment to any countries which implement such controls.

All items are checked and photographed prior to packaging, and we aim to dispatch 1-3 days after receiving cleared payment.
