Antique Silver George III Salver made in 1783
An elegant antique silver George III salver of shaped circular form with a beaded border and stands on three ball and claw feet.
To the centre is a finely engraved original armorial in a shield shape cartouche.
The salver is in excellent condition and of a somewhat unusual size.
Dimensions, diameter 23 cm, (9 inches) rather than the more common eight or ten inch sizes.
Weight, 15.25 troy oz.
Thomas Chawner, born 1734. Son of John Chawner and Anne, nee Chaloner, of Muslane in Derbyshire.
John described as gentleman when Thomas apprenticed to Ebenezer Coker, 4 December 1754 on payment of £30. Free, 13 January 1762. Livery, December 1771. Heal records him as plate worker, 60 Paternoster Row from 1759, both alone and in partnership with William Chawner; and at Red Lion Street, Clerkenwell, 1767; and he appears as spoon maker, Paternoster Row in the Parl. Report list 1773.
He was obviously working, at least, from the date of his freedom, but due to the hiatus in the registers, his first mark entered is 15 October 1773. Address: 60 Paternoster Row. Second mark, 1 November 1775. Third mark, 31 May 1783. Address: 9 Ave Maria Lane, where Heal records him till 1785 (the address previously of Thomas Whipham and Charles Wright, q.v.).
Married Sarah Emery and had one son, Henry. He is said to have held an appointment at the Mint. Died between 1802 and 1811.
