A rare neoclassical George III period old Sheffield plate basket engraved with the initials “ER” below a lion rampant crest.
The armorial is in a lozenge shape surround, indicating it was specially made for a lady.
The basket is unusual as the great majority of 18th century baskets are made with a swing-handle (for serving). It is quite possible that this basket could have been used for needlework, as well as for fruit or cakes.
A very pretty and unusual piece which is in good condition.
A similar basket from the 18th century is illustrated in Bradbury’s 1912 book on old Sheffield plate.
