Description

An excellent quality neoclassical period oil and vinegar cruet.

The heavy gauge cruet stand is finely hand pierced and the scrolled handle is interspersed with shell decoration. It all stands on four cast decorative ball and claw feet.

The period cut glass bottles are surmounted by the original wrythen finialed silver tops engraved with contemporary  initials.

The bottle tops and the silver collared necks to the bottles are both struck with the lion passant standard mark.

The bottles and the cruet stand are in good condition.

Dimensions: height 21.8 cm, width 15.5 cm; weight (silver without glass) 13.5 troy oz, weight (silver with glass) 35 troy oz.

Details from Grimwade:

William Lancester was the son of Robert Lancester late of Wimbleton in the Country of Surrey carpenter deceased, apprenticed to Alexander Johnston 4th June 1759 and turned over to John Hyatt, 8th August 1761.

Free, 4th February 1767. Mark entered as smallworker, 18th August 1770. Address: Noble Street (where he is so recorded in the Parl. Report list, 1773).

In the 1773 Register appears the entry “William Lancester & Charles Seymour Smallworkers, Noble Street. 15 July 1773”. Note this is only an extract of the entry of their mark in the former book, but no mark is struck in the space provided.

It should be noted that Charles Seymour, mentioned above as partner to Lancester, also worked with John Hyatt to whom Lancester was turned over in 1761.

Some countries levy import duties and local taxes. Payment of these is the purchaser’s responsibility and beyond the control of William Walter Antiques Ltd. When the container has reached the destination country, a customs representative will contact you for payment prior to delivery.

Import restrictions are applicable to some destinations, especially the import of products containing materials such as ivory and tortoiseshell. We cannot accept orders requiring shipment to any countries which implement such controls.

All items are checked and photographed prior to packaging, and we aim to dispatch 1-3 days after receiving cleared payment.
