An elegant late 18th century antique silver loving cup with loop handles.

The loving cup is very plain with feathered decoration to the junctions of the handles.

The cup still retains its original gilded interior.

It is very much in the neoclassical style with two handles and of a vase shape.

It is in good condition with a pleasing patina.

Capacity: 1100 ml (a shade less than 2 UK pints).

Dimensions: height (to top of handles) 24.5 cm, diameter (across handles) 17.5 cm; weight 21.25 troy oz.

William Stroud (from Grimwade p. 673):

William Stroud was the son of  John Stroud of Burleigh Street, Strand, polisher, citizen and blacksmith.

He was apprenticed to John Wirgman of Princes Street, Leicester Fields as goldsmith on 4th October 1769, on payment of £10.00 and turned over to Benjamin Laver of  New Bond Street on 4th December 1771.

Free 6th November 1776. First mark entered as plateworker on 7th July 1788. Address: 4 Burleigh Street, Strand.

Second mark, 9th March 1821. Moved to 2 Red Lion Court, Fleet Street, 27th August 1823.

Heal records William Stroud, goldsmith, Maiden Lane, Wood Street, 1761 – who must be an earlier separate individual for whom there is no entry of a mark. Also William Strowd, goldsmith, Burleigh Street, Strand, 1792 – 1804, Thomas Stroud, goldworker, 1829 (section VII) may be connected.

We deliver to the address provided at the time of purchase but not to PO addresses, as a signature is required upon delivery.

Some countries levy import duties and local taxes. Payment of these is the purchaser’s responsibility and beyond the control of William Walter Antiques Ltd. When the container has reached the destination country, a customs representative will contact you for payment prior to delivery.

Import restrictions are applicable to some destinations, especially the import of products containing materials such as ivory and tortoiseshell. We cannot accept orders requiring shipment to any countries which implement such controls.

All items are checked and photographed prior to packaging, and we aim to dispatch 1-3 days after receiving cleared payment.
