Description

A fine antique silver George III dish cross and burner made by Joseph Lewis of London for George Paterson of Castle Huntly.

This lovely dish cross is in excellent condition and is fully retractable with a detachable burner. It bears the crest and motto in two places of George Paterson of Castle Huntly, near Dundee.

This dish cross was almost certainly made for his marriage in 1775 to the Hon. Anne Gray, daughter of the 11th Lord Gray. The castle – built in 1452 – was acquired by Paterson from the widow of the 17th Earl of Strathmore, ancestor of Queen Elizabeth II.

George Paterson was born in Dundee and rose to the rank of surgeon in the British Army. He made his fortune in India having been appointed secretary to Sir John Lindsay in 1769. He was known as a man of outstanding ability, as well as being cultured, amiable and generous. He was very charitable to his home city of Dundee and his portrait, by Henry Raeburn, now hangs in the Dundee Art Gallery and Museum. This dish cross was in the collection of the Paterson family until the sale of the castle in 1946.

Dimensions: length (when fully extended) 34 cm; weight 17 troy oz.
