This exceptional antique silver and glass Warwick cruet set is made by the finest maker of cruets and casters, Samuel Wood. The cruet consists of a large caster, two smaller casters and two oil/vinegar bottles on the original stand.
The casters have a plain baluster-shaped form onto a circular foot and retain their original push-fit domed covers. The glass bottles are original and the casters, together with the lids, are well hallmarked in the correct fashion.
The components of this impressive antique cruet set are displayed on the hallmarked plain cinquefoil-shaped form stand. The stand is marked underneath, as well as at the top of the handle.
The stand incorporates a plain frame with five receiver rings and two stopper rings, all standing on four cast sterling silver opposing scrolling decorated feet.
The stand is ornamented with the family crest of William McDowall of St Kitts (Caribbean) and Castle Semple (Scotland). He was born in 1719 and died in 1784 having made a vast fortune in the West Indies in the sugar and rum trades.
The cruet is in excellent condition and is a perfect example of the work of the finest cruet and caster maker of the period, Samuel Wood (1704-94).

Samuel Wood (c. 1704 – 1794), apprenticed to Thomas Bamford 1721, free 1730. First mark entered as largeworker, 1733. Second mark c. 1738. Third mark, 1739. Fourth mark entered 1754. Fifth mark 1756. Warden 1758 – 60, and Prime Warden 1763.
Through his apprenticeship to Thomas Bamford – who had been bound to Charles Adam – Wood came from a continuous line of specialist caster-makers and in turn trained both Jabez Daniell and Robert Piercey (q.v.), both clearly established also in the same line of production.
Wood’s cruets and individual casters, although produced in quantity, are of a uniformly high standard and one of the most attractively designed smaller items of plate; without which, no reasonably equipped table of the 18th century appears to have been complete.

We deliver to the address provided at the time of purchase but not to PO addresses, as a signature is required upon delivery.
Some countries levy import duties and local taxes. Payment of these is the purchaser’s responsibility and beyond the control of William Walter Antiques Ltd. When the container has reached the destination country, a customs representative will contact you for payment prior to delivery.
Import restrictions are applicable to some destinations, especially the import of products containing materials such as ivory and tortoiseshell. We cannot accept orders requiring shipment to any countries which implement such controls.
