A very rare antique silver sugar caster with a most unusual “quilted design” by the specialist caster maker, Samuel Wood.
This “quilt design” as it is known is occasionally seen on sauceboats and soup tureens of the George II period, but to see it on a caster is extremely rare and it is the first time we have had one in stock.
The caster is beautifully pierced and is in excellent condition.
Samuel Wood was a specialist maker of casters and cruets and this is a fine and rare example of his work.
Dimensions: height 15.1 cm; weight 4.69 troy oz.
Samuel Wood (c. 1704 – 1794), apprenticed to Thomas Bamford 1721, free 1730. First mark entered as largeworker, 1733. Second mark c. 1738. Third mark, 1739. Fourth mark entered 1754. Fifth mark 1756. Warden 1758 – 60, and Prime Warden 1763.
Through his apprenticeship to Thomas Bamford – who had been bound to Charles Adam – Wood came from a continuous line of specialist caster-makers and in turn trained both Jabez Daniell and Robert Piercey (q.v.), both clearly established also in the same line of production.
Wood’s cruets and individual casters, although produced in quantity, are of a uniformly high standard and one of the most attractively designed smaller items of plate; without which, no reasonably equipped table of the 18th century appears to have been complete.

Purchases will be sent via Royal Mail Special Delivery, FedEx, Parcel Force, A-Z couriers; other delivery providers may be used in extenuating circumstances. We deliver to the address provided at the time of purchase but not to PO addresses, as a signature is required upon delivery.
Some countries levy import duties and local taxes. Payment of these is the purchaser’s responsibility and beyond the control of William Walter Antiques Ltd. When the container has reached the destination country, a customs representative will contact you for payment prior to delivery.
Import restrictions are applicable to some destinations, especially the import of products containing materials such as ivory and tortoiseshell. We cannot accept orders requiring shipment to any countries which implement such controls.
All items are checked and photographed prior to packaging, and we aim to dispatch 1-3 days after receiving cleared payment.
