Antique Silver George II Salver made in 1727

A very fine early George II silver salver which has a “Chippendale” or “pie crust” pattern border and still bears the beautiful contemporary armorials.
The three feet are of an early scrolled form.
The salver is of exceptionally heavy weight (being about 25% heavier than usual) and is in lovely condition with a fine patina.
John Tuite was a specialist salver maker and this is about as fine an example as one could find.
Dimensions: diameter 31 cm; weight 40 troy oz.
John Tuite was apprenticed to John Matthews of Dublin goldsmiths in 1703 and worked in Dublin from 1710 to 1720, using the same or a similar mark to that entered later in London, before moving to London in 1723.
First mark entered as largeworker, undated, between September 1721 and July 1725. Address: Ireland’s Yard, Blackfriars. Moved to Litchfield Street, near Newport Market, also undated.
Second mark, 27th June 1739. Address: Litchfield Street, St Ann’s Westminster. Heal records him as goldsmith, Irelands Yard, 1721; Green Door, Litchfield Street, near Newport Street, 1721-39 and George Street, York Buildings, Strand 1745.
Tuite specialised in making salvers and had a very distinctive makers mark incorporating a ewer with his initials “JT”. Died in 1740.

Some countries levy import duties and local taxes. Payment of these is the purchaser’s responsibility and beyond the control of William Walter Antiques Ltd. When the container has reached the destination country, a customs representative will contact you for payment prior to delivery.
Import restrictions are applicable to some destinations, especially the import of products containing materials such as ivory and tortoiseshell. We cannot accept orders requiring shipment to any countries which implement such controls.
All items are checked and photographed prior to packaging, and we aim to dispatch 1-3 days after receiving cleared payment.
