Antique Silver George II Pepper/Spice Caster made in 1727
A good early eighteenth-century pepper/spice caster, which stands on a circular foot with a plain baluster shape body surmounted by a girdle to the lower half.
The top is finely pierced and it is in excellent condition.
The caster was made in London in 1727 by Meschach Godwin.

Son of Shadreck Godwin of Hemstead in the County of Hertford farrier, apprenticed to Humphrey Paine, 18th August 1709. Signatory as a journeyman to the petition against assaying the work of foreigners not having served seven years of apprenticeship, February 1716. Free, 17 July 1718, New Standard mark entered as largeworker, 16 January 1723. Address: Fauster Lane. Free Goldsmith. Second sterling mark 15th March 1723.
Heal records him at Foster Lane from 1722 to 1726. Presumably, the Meshack Godwin of St. John Zachary, London bachelor, married to Elisabeth Lester of St Mildred, Bread Street, widow, at St.Ben’t, Paul’s Wharf, 4 November 1726
