Antique Silver George III Warming Stand made in 1782

A rare and unusual early George III period neoclassical style warming stand with a detachable burner.
The plain stand is oval in form and has beaded decoration to each of the four legs which terminate in a shell foot.
The condition is excellent throughout.
It is an unusual piece by an important partnership of silversmiths.
Dimensions: length (of the top) 28.9 cm, width (of the top) 19.75 cm, interior length 28.2 cm, interior width 18.9 cm; weight 19 troy oz.
No record of apprenticeship or freedom. His name suggests a Swedish origin and possibly arrival in this country already trained as goldsmith.
First appears in London as plateworker, Church Street, Soho, in the Parl. Report list 1773. His mark alone was therefore presumably entered in the missing register a little before this.
Second mark (two sizes) entered as plateworker, in partnership with Stephen Gilbert, 17th July 1780. Address: 29 Church Street Ann (St Anne’s Soho).
Heal records the partnership, at this address till 1793, also Fogelberg alone till 1800. There is, however, I suspect, confusion at times with the mark of Alexander Field which may have led to a false assumption of the length of his working career. Either alone, or with Gilbert, his productions show an elegant restrained classicism, particularly in his specialty of the use of small cameo-like medallions based on the Tassie paste gems popular in England at that time.
C.C. Oman has pointed out parallel use of such decoration in Sweden, suggesting Fogelberg’s influence returning to his country of origin.

Import restrictions are applicable to some destinations, especially the import of products containing materials such as ivory and tortoiseshell. We cannot accept orders requiring shipment to any countries which implement such controls.
All items are checked and photographed prior to packaging, and we aim to dispatch 1-3 days after receiving cleared payment.
