Description

A rare antique silver George I tea caddy of octagonal form with a sliding cover at the top for ease of filling, plus a detachable cap.

Underneath the caddy are the original owner’s initials “GP” and the scratch weight of “4 troy oz. 8 dwt.”

Dimensions: height 12 cm, base 7 x 4.4 cm

The word “caddy” was derived from the Malaysian work “kati”, meaning approximately one and one fifth of a pound in weight. The cost of tea during the 17th century was high – 40 shillings per pound in 1664 – but much higher in price when heavily taxed in the 18th century; that is why a lot of the caddies made between 1760 – 1810 are fitted with a lock and key.

Apprenticed to Thomas Ash in in 1706. Free 1714. London mark entered 1714.
