Maker
a Crescent Enclosing a Mullet

A mark that has engendered a lot of discussion over the years. It seems likely that the mark was first used by Nicholas Bartholomew in 1551, later becoming a workshop punch that was used by apprentices of Bartholomew.

It seems likely that it was next used by Thomas Benbowe, as he was apprenticed to Bartholomew in 1578/9 and would have been made free about eight years later.

Many spoons between 1589 – 1609 have been recorded with this mark, so the most likely candidate is Thomas Benbowe.
