Pair of George III Antique Silver Goblets made in 1776

A pair of rare George III antique silver goblets. The goblets have tapering bowls, are engraved with an inscription and initials, and are augmented by a beautifully engraved swag of flowers and leaves with a central bow. The initials are “M H” entwined and the inscription is “Blessed are the Peacemakers”. Each goblet has a gilt interior, is raised on a circular foot and with a gadroon border.
Dimensions: height 16.25 cm; weight 13.3 troy oz.
Provenance: the goblets are believed to have been owned by Mary, Countess Howe, wife of the Admiral of the fleet, Richard Howe. Admiral Howe is best known for his service during the American Revolutionary War and a peace commissioner with the American rebels. At the beginning of the American War of Independence, Howe and his wife, Mary, were known to be sympathetic to the colonists. He had known Benjamin Franklin since late 1774 and was joined in a commission with his brother, General Sir William Howe, head of the land forces, to attempt reconciliation. The famous portrait of Mary by Thomas Gainsborough now hangs in Kenwood House.
Charles Aldridge, apprenticed to his uncle Edward Aldridge 1758, free 1766. First mark as plateworker, in partnership with Henry Green, 1775. Second mark alone 1786. Third small mark 1789.

Some countries levy import duties and local taxes. Payment of these is the purchaser’s responsibility and beyond the control of William Walter Antiques Ltd. When the container has reached the destination country, a customs representative will contact you for payment prior to delivery.
Import restrictions are applicable to some destinations, especially the import of products containing materials such as ivory and tortoiseshell. We cannot accept orders requiring shipment to any countries which implement such controls.
All items are checked and photographed prior to packaging, and we aim to dispatch 1-3 days after receiving cleared payment.
