Antique Silver George II Cake Basket made in 1751
A George II antique silver basket of shaped oval outline with applied and cast border of wheat-sheaves, acanthus leaves, fruiting vine tendrils and a basket of fruit to each end. The flared sides are pierced with scroll-work and anthemion motifs.
The handle issues from leaf motifs and is applied with a scroll-edged vacant cartouche. The centre of the basket is engraved with the coat of arms and stands on four mask capped scroll supports.
The basket is exceptionally heavy and in wonderful condition.
The basket was traditionally used for cakes, but could also be used for fruit or bread.
Signed/inscribed: 1751 weight 45.5 Troy ozs .The fine original armorials are those of Lee of Buckingham impaling Braine of Bedford.
Edward Aldridge entered his first mark in 1724 and worked in Foster Lane. Second mark in 1739 and third mark, in partnership with John Stamper, in 1753. Died 1766.
A very fine maker who specialised in beautiful pierced work, most notably on baskets and inkstands.

We deliver to the address provided at the time of purchase but not to PO addresses, as a signature is required upon delivery.
Some countries levy import duties and local taxes. Payment of these is the purchaser’s responsibility and beyond the control of William Walter Antiques Ltd. When the container has reached the destination country, a customs representative will contact you for payment prior to delivery.
Import restrictions are applicable to some destinations, especially the import of products containing materials such as ivory and tortoiseshell. We cannot accept orders requiring shipment to any countries which implement such controls.
All items are checked and photographed prior to packaging, and we aim to dispatch 1-3 days after receiving cleared payment.
