Antique Silver Charles II Lidded Tankard made in 1684
Out of stock
A fine and large antique silver Charles II period lidded tankard made in London in 1684 by Osmond Strickland.
The tankard has an upright scroll thumbpiece and is plain and unengraved, except for some small initials “F C” underneath.
It is in good condition with a nice patina. There are just four small indentations – on the top of the handle – where the thumbpiece has rested for over 300 years.
It is very clearly hallmarked on the body and lid, and has the makers mark struck low on the handle. The mark “OS” with a mullet has been identified as Osmond Strickland by David Mitchell in his recent book; so many makers before 1697 are unknown, so this is a nice feature.
The tankard is of large capacity and will take 3.5 UK pints of beer.
Dimensions: 12.5 cm to top of thumb piece; weight 29.9 troy oz.
Holloware maker in the Charles II period.
