Robert Abercrombie, sometimes using the spelling Abercromby, details from A. G. Grimwade, London Goldsmiths 1697 - 1837. No record of apprenticeship or freedom which is due to the fact that he began his career in Newcastle, where he is recorded as journeyman to John Carnaby, goldsmith of that town, 3rd May 1720. He presumably moved to London, probably in company with George Hindmarsh. He entered his first mark as large worker, in partnership with George Hindmarsh, 11th May 1731. Address: Christopher’s Court, St Martin’s Le Grand. Second mark alone, 5th October 1731. Address: New Rents, St Martin’s Le Grand. Third mark, 23rd June 1739. Same address. Fourth mark (New Standard) 29nd April 1740. Appears to have specialised in salver making.
