Richard Carter Daniel Smith & Robert Sharp
Richard Carter on record of apprenticeship or freedom. Probably a younger brother or cousin of John Carter II.
First mark, in partnership with Robert Makepeace as plate workers, entered 20 January 1777 ( same day as John Carters's entry is dated " Left Trade" ) Address
Bartholomew Close, Second mark, in partnershipwith Daniel Smith and Robert Sharp, 9 December 1778, Address: 14, Westmorland Buildings (Aldersgate Street) . It is curious that Carter's mark should appear above those of his partners who had already been working together since 1763 and would have seemed senior to him.
Heal records Carter and Makepeace as goldsmiths, 6 Serle Street, Lincoln's Inn, from 1772-7. It would seem probable that their 1777 mark was entered consequent on their moving to Bartholomew Close to take over the workshop of the retiring of John Carter, and that an earlier mark had been entered in the missing register before 1773.
