Son of Edward Broughton of the parish of St. Sepulchre in the Country of Middlesex tallow chandler, apprenticed to Robert Albin Cox on 8th June 1757 on payment of £15.00. Free 4th July 1764. Mark entered as plateworker on 8th January 1779. Address: 11 Well Yard, Little Britain. Heal records him as silversmith, St John’s Square, Clerkenwell, from 1767 - 1773 (where he appears as goldsmith in the Parl. Reports list 1773); in Bartholomew Close 1776 and in Little Britain 1779. It is very probable, therefore, that he entered a mark c. 1765, in the missing largeworker book of 1758 - 1773. This is supported by the fact of his taking Robert Gaze as apprentice, 6th February 1765.
