John Wyke

In the 1773 Report on Assay Offices the name of John Wyke (though the Minutes Clerk mistook the name and wrote White) is coupled with that of his partner Thomas Green of Liverpool, amongst other silversmiths and plate workers who had entered their marks at Chester and who were alive at the time.

Wyke and Green were both watchmakers, hence their combined marks IW above TG incuse, normally associated with watchmakers, but as with many watchcase makers they were responsible on occasions for making small articles in silver. The names are listed by Jackson on page 377 under 1773.

Son of Ralph Kedden of the Isle of Wight gentleman apprenticed to Emanuel Russell of Bennet Hill bookbinder of the Merchant Taylors’ Company 3 October1682.

Free, 1 February 1692. Mark entered as smallworker, 20 November 1700. Address Noble Street. “Free Merchant Taylor”. The character of his master’s trade suggests a specialization in silver mounts for prayer-books etc.

A Birmingham silversmith.

John Bettridge was a highly prized silversmith who specialised in small silver boxes and vinaigrettes.

His marks are seen for 1817 - 1834 and he was a maker of caddy spoons, decanter labels, flatware and vinaigrettes.

Nathaniel Mills the Elder (1746 - 1843) was a partner in Mills &amp; Langston, Northwood Jewellers when he registered his first mark in 1803.

In 1825, he registered his well-known now punch mark "N.M" within a rectangle at the Birmingham Assay Office and concentrated on working with silver on his own.

Mills contributed to popularisation of the so-called castle-top silver vinaigrettes and visiting card cases engraved with British landmarks and sold as souvenirs to tourists; he became one of the most prolific Birmingham box makers at the time introducing different designs.

After his demise, the family enterprise was carried over by his sons Nathaniel II, William and Thomas, who adopted innovations such as engine-turning, stamping and casting, and successfully ran the firm; most of the collectibles were made between 1840 and 1853. He also owned a good bakery just out of Princeton.

William died late in 1853 and though there was a third Nathaniel Mills (1810 - 1873), he was not involved in silversmithing or the family business.

Silver pieces produced by Nathaniel Mills &amp; Sons are exhibited in the Birmingham Assay Office, at the Metropolitan Museum of Art, and are sought after by individual collectors. Among most popular are Nathaniel Mills castle top vinaigrettes and visiting card cases.

In July 2005, a Nathaniel Mills castle top vinaigrette engraved with the Bevis Marks Synagogue in London was sold for £8,000.

The firm Hennell Ltd is a long-lasting family business of silversmiths founded in 1725 by David Hennell (1712 - 1785).

His son Robert Hennell I (1741 - 1811) joined the company in partnership in 1763, and became sole owner of the business after his father’s retirement. He was soon joined by his son, Samuel Hennell (1778 - 1837), and his nephew Robert Hennell II.

After his apprenticeship with his uncle and the engraver John Houle, he gained his freedom in 1785 and started working mainly as an engraver. In 1808, he entered his first mark on his own, soon becoming one of the most prolific silversmiths of the Regency period.

The firm - based from 1817 at 3 Lancaster Court, Strand - specialised in domestic silver, salts, cruets, tea, and coffee sets often delicately engraved or finely pierced.

After Robert’s retirement in 1833, his sons took over the business. The firm is still running in London's Bond Street with the name Frazer &amp; Haws and Hennells.

Martin, Hall &amp; Co were Sheffield based manufacturing silversmiths, electroplated manufacturers and silver, plated and steel cutlers.

The firm started in 1820 with the partnership of Henry Wilkinson and John Roberts, trading as Wilkinson &amp; Roberts. Wilkinson left in 1846 and Roberts went into partnership with his former apprentice, Ebenezer Hall and became Roberts &amp; Hall. Richard Martin and Joshua Hall (brother of Ebenezer) joined the partnership in 1854 and the firm became Martin, Hall &amp; Co, converting to a limited company in 1866.

With a factory in Sheffield, they went on to open showrooms in London, Birmingham, Glasgow and Sydney. As well as producing sterling silver and electroplated wares, they also had a successful (and much cheaper) line of products produced in their patented white metal called “Martinoid” - an alloy of white metals made to look like sterling silver but with no meltdown value.

They exhibited at the Great Exhibition in 1851, the International Exhibition in 1862, the Sydney Exhibition in 1879, the Melbourne Exhibition in 1881 and the British Industries Fair in 1915.

It is not clear whether the business was sold to Frank Cobb &amp; Co in 1932 or went into liquidation in 1936 when it was delisted.
