Description

A pair of fine Georgian neoclassical candlesticks which stand on oval bases with fine bead decoration.

The bases, stems and sconces have delicate fluted decoration.

The nozzles are detachable, original and correctly hallmarked.

The candlesticks bear the incuse mark of George III (tax mark) which was only used for the years 1784-85 (sometimes 1786 in the provinces). Tax was introduced in 1784 on silver to help pay for the wars in America.

They both retain their original mahogany inserts, which is a nice feature.

The candlesticks are in good condition.

Dimensions: height 30.2 cm, length (of bases) 15.5 cm, width (of bases) 12.5 cm

Maker
John Parsons & Co

Took over John Winter’s candlesticks business in 1783 and 10 years later (1793) transferred the business to John Green & Company. Exclusive maker of fine candlesticks, candelabra and chambersticks.

John Parsons died in 1814 and when his sister Mary Parsons died in 1815, she left a bequest of £1,500.00 (approx £200 thousand in today’s money) in her will, to help needy silversmiths. This was founded in affectionate memory by her brother and the charity continues today in Sheffield.
