Maker: John Emes, Wilkes Booth

A lovely George III antique silver pair of wick trimmers (snuffers) and tray. The tray is of a very attractive octagonal form and finely engraved with Greek key and Palmette motifs.

The wick trimmers are made by Wilkes Booth and the matching tray by John Emes, both are engraved with the same family crest of a bugle.

Both tray and trimmers are in excellent condition.

Wilkes Booth was a specialist wick trimmer maker and made virtually nothing else;  John Emes would have ordered them to sit on the tray.

These were made in the year of the Battle of Trafalgar and on another note of historical interest Wilkes Booths brother’s grandson( John Wilkes Booth) shot Abraham Lincoln dead at Fords Theatre in Washington D.C in April 1865.

Dimensions,  tray  length 26.25 cm , width 9.5 cm width; wick trimmers length  16 cm.

Weight, 8.3 troy oz pair.

John Emes

Ostensibly the son of William Emes of Bowbridge Field near Derby surveyor, apprenticed to William Woolett of Green Street, Leicester Fields Citizen and Goldsmith, engraver on payment of £105 (one of the largest premiums recorded in the apprentice registers), 7 October 1778. Free, 5 July 1786.

First mark entered as a plate worker, in partnership with Henry Chawner on 27 August 1796. Address: Amen Corner. He presumably is dead in 1808, when Rebecca and William Emes entered their mark at the same address.

His work, mostly tea and coffee services with some tankards, shows a taste for elegant design and fine finish.

Wilkes Booth

No record of apprenticeship or freedom.

First mark entered as snuffermaker, 11th October 1787. Address: 8 Albermarle Street. Second mark, 8th July 1805. Third mark, in partnership with John Booth (potentially his son), 28th June 1810, same address.
