A very good quality early George II silver salver with a chippendale style border. The salver stands on four scroll feet and is finely engraved with a stage head crest and the initials "E M" below.

A very good quality early George II silver salver with a chippendale style border.

The salver stands on four scroll feet and is finely engraved with a stag head crest and the initials “E M” below.

The salver is made by the specialist salver maker, John Tuite.

It is of lovely weight and condition.

Dimensions: diameter 24.5 cm; weight 19.5 troy oz.

John Tuite

John Tuite was apprenticed to John Matthews of Dublin goldsmiths in 1703 and worked in Dublin from 1710 to 1720, using the same or a similar mark to that entered later in London, before moving to London in 1723.

First mark entered as largeworker, undated, between September 1721 and July 1725. Address: Ireland’s Yard, Blackfriars. Moved to Litchfield Street, near Newport Market, also undated.

Second mark, 27th June 1739. Address: Litchfield Street, St Ann’s Westminster. Heal records him as goldsmith, Irelands Yard, 1721; Green Door, Litchfield Street, near Newport Street, 1721-39 and George Street, York Buildings, Strand 1745.

Tuite specialised in making salvers and had a very distinctive makers mark incorporating a ewer with his initials “JT”. Died in 1740.

Purchases will be sent via Royal Mail Special Delivery, FedEx, Parcel Force, A-Z couriers; other delivery providers may be used in extenuating circumstances. We deliver to the address provided at the time of purchase but not to PO addresses, as a signature is required upon delivery.

Some countries levy import duties and local taxes. Payment of these is the purchaser’s responsibility and beyond the control of William Walter Antiques Ltd. When the container has reached the destination country, a customs representative will contact you for payment prior to delivery.

Import restrictions are applicable to some destinations, especially the import of products containing materials such as ivory and tortoiseshell. We cannot accept orders requiring shipment to any countries which implement such controls.

All items are checked and photographed prior to packaging, and we aim to dispatch 1-3 days after receiving cleared payment.
