Description

A wonderful early Victorian silver jug of shaped Classical Greek style (often referred to as oinochoie) with a snake motif at the top of the handle and the head of a snake to the bottom.

The hand chased decoration is beautifully fine and crisp and the interior is gilded.

Between the handles there are small bone spacers indicating it was probably used for hot milk or mulled wine.

It looks almost unused and in superb condition.

There is a jug made in the same year by the same makers in the Victoria and Albert museum of almost identical shape but with Egyptian motifs instead of Classical Greek.

Dimensions, height to top of handle 20.75 cm.

Weight, 11.75 troy oz.

Capacity, about 500 ml.
Item incorporates ivory and has been registered under the Ivory Act 2018
Maker
Charles Reily & George Storer

Charles & George Reily & Storer – were silversmiths operating in London during the first half of the 19th Century during the reigns of William IV and Victoria.

Charles Reily went into partnership with his mother Mary Reily and entered his first mark on 31st May 1826 from their workshop address at Carey Lane, London, just round the corner from the Worshipful Company of Goldsmiths’ Hall. It appears they went into partnership with George Storer in 1829 as they registered another mark as silverplate workers on the 1st January of that year. They moved briefly to Paternoster Row in 1835 just as the new hall for the Goldsmiths was opened but were back at Carey Lane by 16th February, 1836.

They registered their third mark in two sizes in 1840. It appears they started to specialise in smaller pieces as their later marks are found mainly on high quality snuff boxes and other smaller items.
