James Dixon & Sons Ltd

J Dixon & Sons were one of the major British manufacturers of silverware – both plate and sterling silver, electroplated Britannia metal, electroplated nickel silver and precision tools. They were also famous for their whistles.

Established in 1806 in Sheffield and trading until 1976, they produced a wide range of domestic items such as bowls, cutting tools, tea services, cocktail shakers and candlesticks. They also produced aircraft propellers and shooting accessories such as gunpowder flasks which they exported in large quantities to America. They have also made famous sporting trophies including the Hales Trophy (commissioned in 1932), awarded to the ship that crosses the Atlantic in the fastest time and the American Masters Golf tournament trophy.

They registered a trademark in 1879, which is a Trumpet with a hanging banner, but had used this mark for many years prior to its registration. It can be found on many of their silver plate items.

Besides being leading suppliers of whistles, they were renowned for silver plate and sterling silver tableware. Their hollowware and their silver tea services are now regarded as very valuable antique items.

The firm remained a family run business until 1976 when it was bought by American interests.
