Description

A fine large antique silver George III loving cup with beautifully cast and shaped bead loop handles, matched by a beaded foot.

The body is plain and the cup is in superb condition.

Dimensions, height 21.5 cm, width over handles  21.75 cm.

Charles Wright

Charles Wright, son of Thomas Wright of Sheffield in the County of York carrier, apprenticed to Thomas Whipham 3 June 1747 on payment of £40. Free, 3 July 1754.

First mark entered as large worker, in partnership with Thomas Whipham, 24 October 1757. Address: Ave Mary Lane, where he appears alone as plateworker in the Parl. Report list 1773. He gave evidence to the committee of the Report on frauds by the sale of mixed silver and plated wares at the same rate per ounce.

Second mark alone, 22 July 1775. Address: 9 Ave Maria Lane. Third mark (two sizes), 3 February 1780. Fourth, 25 August 1780. Heal records him as goldsmith, 9 Ave Mary Lane, married 1764, there till 1780; 76 Strand, 1784-8; and 94 Watling Street, 1790.

He was elected to Livery, 1758. Court 1777 and Warden, 1783-5. Resigned 1790, when he probably also retired from business, and died 1815.He was a very fine holloware maker specialising in Cups,Tankards,Tea and Coffee pots and Sauceboats.

The Ave Mary Lane address was occupied from 1783 by Thomas Chawner.

Import restrictions are applicable to some destinations, especially the import of products containing materials such as ivory and tortoiseshell. We cannot accept orders requiring shipment to any countries which implement such controls.

All items are checked and photographed prior to packaging, and we aim to dispatch 1-3 days after receiving cleared payment.
