Description

A fine and large George III antique silver bowl which still retains its wonderful and original mercurial gilding.

The large bowl has bold gadroon and shell borders, with unusual lion paws feet.

It is in superb condition.

Dimensions: length 21.35 cm, width 11.2 cm; weight 11.83 troy oz.

The maker, Simon Levy, took over from his father Emmanuel in 1817/18 and first went bankrupt in 1823. He finally gave up silversmithing in 1832 when he went bankrupt again. Levy then seems to have become a travelling salesman for optical supplies and turns up in the Channel Islands, where he was murdered on 9 January 1846 in a cafe in Saint Helier.

Simon Levy, along with his father Emmanuel, was a prominent member of Exeter’s Jewish community.
