Maker: Ralph Maidman

A fine early George II silver covered sugar bowl of plain form.

The bowl is in excellent condition and is fully hallmarked on both the base and the detachable cover.

The detachable covers of these rare early bowls were often turned upside down to place articles of tea equipage on – such as mote spoons and sugar nips.

Ralph Maidman of Noble Street was a specialist in small holloware (such as this) and he entered his mark in May 1731, which makes this one of his earliest pieces.

Dimensions: height 8.5 cm, diameter 10.6 cm; weight 7 troy oz.

Ralph Maidman

Ralph Maidman was the son of Ralph Maidman of Compton in the County of Surrey, yeoman, apprenticed to Thomas Moore on 6th June 1711 on payment of £4.00.

Heal records him as above and insolvent, 1737. In 1728, he appears in the will of Thomas Knott, Citizen and Goldsmith, as in possession of a tenement belonging to the latter in St Anne, Aldersgate.
