Description

A pair of very fine George II sterling silver candlesticks with reeded concave sconces, lobed shoulders and knopped baluster stems; all raised on stepped octagonal bases with scrolled corners.

The candlesticks are crested  on each base. The crest is that of Viscount Chetwynd. The crest could be of either Viscount Chetwynd the first, second or third as their dates overlap each other.

The candlesticks are in top class condition and of a lovely gauge and patina.

Dimensions: height 7 inches ,17.78 cm, diagonally 4 inches ,10.78 cm

Weight, 28 troy oz.

Maker
James Gould

James Gould, London silversmith, apprenticed to David Green 26th October 1714.

Free 1722. Two marks (Sterling and New Standard) entered 19 November  1722. Address “at the three Golden Lions in Gutter Lane “Free of the Goldsmith Company

3rd mark circa 1733. Livery 1739.

4th mark 30 May 1739 “ Candlestick Maker” An entry of 25 March 1743, with large blot where mark may have been stuck, reads “ removed out of Gutter Lane to the Golden Bottle in Avy Mary Lane.

5th mark, 6th June 1743 . Court, 1745.

Presumably dead by 31 August 1747, when “Mrs James Gould”  entered her mark.

Heal records him as plateworker, Golden Lion or Three Golden Lions , Gutter Lane , 1722-37 . Candlesticks, Gutter Lane, 1739-43 and Golden Bottle, Ave Mary Lane, 1741-4.

James , son of James Gould and Mary his wife , was born 22 February 1730, and baptized 24 February at St.Vedast, Foster Lane. Apprenticed to his father, 3 October 1744. He is presumably the James Gould, candlestick- maker, Ave  Maria Lane, in the Parl.

Reports list 1773, but no mark seems attributable to him. The baptisms of three other sons, William 1731, Henry 1732 and John 1735 are recorded in the St. Vedast registered and also pathetically three daughters, Mary , 1734, 1736 and 1737, the same name repeated in hope each time.
