Description

A handsome George II silver tankard of plain tapering form with an applied girdle. It has a stepped-dome hinged cover with a scrolling thumb-piece, a hollow-scroll handle terminating with a leaf and is raised on a stepped circular base.

The tankard is crested and initialled. The initial’s on the handle are “E” over “J D” and the front is crested with a lion, below which are the initials “GED”. The “EJD” initials would be the original 1755 initials, and the “GED” initials and family crest, would have been engraved for his son around 1780.

Fully marked on the body and cover.

William Shaw II, apprenticed to John Swift 1736, free 1748. First mark entered as large worker 1749. Second and third marks, in partnership with William Priest, 1749 and 1759.

William Priest (or Preist), apprenticed to Richard Gurney 1740, free 1749. First and second marks entered as large worker in partnership with William Shaw in 1749 and 1759. Third mark with his brother James Priest in 1764; they worked together until 1773.

The Shaw & Priest partnership specialised in making good quality hollowware coffee pots, tankards and some salvers.

We provide worldwide postage/shipping and everything is fully tracked and insured. Purchases will be sent via Royal Mail Special Delivery, FedEx, Parcel Force, A-Z couriers; other delivery providers may be used in extenuating circumstances. We deliver to the address provided at the time of purchase but not to PO addresses, as a signature is required upon delivery.

Some countries levy import duties and local taxes. Payment of these is the purchaser’s responsibility and beyond the control of William Walter Antiques Ltd. When the container has reached the destination country, a customs representative will contact you for payment prior to delivery.

Import restrictions are applicable to some destinations, especially the import of products containing materials such as ivory and tortoiseshell. We cannot accept orders requiring shipment to any countries which implement such controls.

All items are checked and photographed prior to packaging, and we aim to dispatch 1-3 days after receiving cleared payment.
