Henry Holland

Henry Holland was a silver flatware manufacturer in London specialising in spoons. He founded the company in 1838 and the firm became Holland & Son in 1851 when his son Henry joined him. In 1866, they made the major acquisition of Elizabeth Eaton & Son - a renowned spoon maker with a long pedigree of making fine quality spoons. Henry senior retired in 1880 and two further partners were taken on by his son to form Holland, Aldwinckle & Slater. Henry junior retired in 1883 and the firm then acquired Chawner & Co. In 1887, they went on to acquire another famous silversmith, Robert Hennel & Sons. By the turn of the 20th century the firm was acknowledged as producing some of the finest silver flatware. It was bought in 1922 by Francis Higgins and continued to trade under its own name until 1932.

An exceptional Victorian silver claret jug with be

An exceptional Victorian silver claret jug with beautiful engraving and a most unusually pierced handle from 1872

The glass is very finely decorated with ladies on each side in Greek or Roman attire. The jug still bears the original owner’s lion crest to one side.

Thomas Smily; youngest of the Smily family, apprenticed after his father. He entered his own mark in the Goldsmiths’ Hall only in 1858, when he was called to manage the business.
